Nepali Female Migrant Workers in Gulf: An Urgent Task.
Prabin K. Prajapati
We talk so often about feminist movement and gender equality but we keep our eyes shut at events of atrocity and barbaric exploitation of Nepali female migrant workers in Gulf. Every other day we learn about dozens of Nepali female migrant workers come back to Nepal with mentally and physically panicked and retarded which have an irreversible impact to normalcy on rest of their lives. Some of them come back with pregnent body and lost memory and become burden to family at origin. In fact those returnees who are forced to come back were adequately traumatised and abused by which they are unable to be normal life for a considerable time.
Ever since the civil war was incepted, the economic opportunity within the country shrinked up. Though civil war has already been over, the country still faces instable political transitions. Low income and a very few choices to livelihoods have forced women to go to Gulf forgetting the possible bad consequences. On the other hand a few greedy and immoral agents encourage ignorant women to follow illegal ways to make big money in short time. At first, Nepali women are allured through explanation of good salary and easy task as housemaids. Unfortunately, these ignorant female migrant workers easily believe them since the agent is locally known through local networks. Exceptionally, a few other women who have already been to foreign land would better like to keep silence though they have earned a good money. Viewing them of having an easy money, other ignorants take a short cut. But the reality is far beyond than explained and horrible. It is true that we have very unstable politics that has deteriorated our livelihood opportunities. It is not a question why women go to gulf and choose such a terrible occupation but the question is how we can control over such reoccurrences and minimize them. Basically exploitation starts from local agents who allure them with enumerable dreams; in fact that never would be fulfilled. It is ridicules that government expects more and more remittances from its worker but never think about how to minimize the risk of being exploited physically and mentally especially in Gulf countries. Though the government has banned to go women in Gulf countries as house maids however they are being trafficked from Indian mega cities. The trend of growing women trafficking in Gulf indicates that there is a big mafia behind it.
Those who suffered from panick and very painful situation in the Gulf and eventually escaped back to the country should be rehabilitated until they recover from the shock so that they can work as volunteers for raising awareness afterwards. These women who suffered from such immeasurable hostile events can be appointed into paid volunteers and share the experience. They can work as local ambassadors for female migrant workers who are seeking job as housemaid in gulf or have already been encouraged by local agents to follow illegal shortcuts. They can tell others what is important to know for a women before they go to foreign land especially Gulf. They should be made educators who might play a vital role in minimizing cases in poverty ridden areas where poor women potent to be being trafficked.
